Five ways to Achieve the ‘Clean’ Beauty Aesthetic with Organic Makeup

The fact that ‘clean beauty’ is currently dominating TikTok (250M+ views and counting!) may suggest it’s an exclusively teen trend, but that isn’t the case.

A modern take on the 90s ‘minimal beauty’ trend, it's essentially a glow-up of ‘no makeup makeup’. (N.B. The ‘all-natural / nothing artificial’ definition of ‘clean beauty’ is discussed at length elsewhere on this blog!)

Typified by glowing, dewy skin, feathered brows and the prettiest flush, ‘skin’ is the key focus. About as far from contouring and power brows/lips as you can get, this look requires minimal makeup, but a real focus on health and nurturing.

Think Modern Winona Ryder, off-duty Bella Hadid or Gwyneth Paltrow.

We’ve never been a fan of heavily caked cosmetics, so this look is so true to the Odylique ‘way’ as well!

Step One:

Step away from the full cover foundation (yes, even if you’re older). Grab your concealers and instead, use to simply cover areas of high redness, under eyes or blemishes.

Use a damp makeup sponge or the tip of your finger, blend into the skin. Nothing about this look should be too ‘matte’ aside from the eye shadow so don’t panic if there’s shine.

We recommend: Odylique Mineral concealer, £18, which is long-lasting, free from skin damaging chemicals and cruelty-free.

Step Two:

Once you’re done with concealer, you need to put some colour back into the face.

Over the age of about about 30, we start to lose colour from the face, so even if you’re a little red, a natural blush can balance your tone.

EXPERT TIP: Do not apply powder blush for this look, use either a cream or a lipstick formula instead, which will sit on the skin more naturally.

Going with a peach, instead of a pink is more natural. Start high on the cheek, directly under the iris, pat the colour on then blend up not out to lift the face.

We recommend: Odylique Mineral Lipstick, in Apricot Sorbet, £18.50 for the best effect.

Step Three:

Whilst the ‘thin arches’ of the nineties ARE on their way back, this look calls for more volume and fluffiness.

Even if your eyebrows are a bit sparse, the technique is easy to try. Simply brush the brows against the direction they grow.

Use a light stroking motion to fill them in if need be, then grab some soap (yes, really) and dabbing your brush into it, brush the hair up and out making sure each one looks defined.

We recommend: Odylique Eyeliner in Brown and our pH Balanced Organic Soaps, from £7, which are gentle enough to use on the eyes.

Step 4: All about the eyes

You need two things for this look – a simple, pared back matte eye and a good mascara.

There are no fancy techniques, simply pat a light-coloured eye shadow on the lids to just above the socket. Then curl the lashes, and stroke two coats of mascara through them.

You don’t want a heavy, or thickening mascara for this – it’s all about ‘clean beauty’ (in the ‘minimal’ sense) and a lightness of touch.

If you fancy a little more drama, use the brown eyeliner pencil above to add a little wing. We recommend: Odylique mineral eyeshadow in Sand, £8.50 and Mascara, £8, the only Soil Association certified mascara.

"I think this is one of the best mascaras I have used, it does not clog and the brush is very nice to use"
                                                                                                                                  Caroline, Odylique customer

Step 5: Lips

The final step is the lips. No lipliner, no contouring, no heavy colour.

Simply pat the same lipstick you used on your cheeks to the centre and blend it out using your finger. Then finish with a full coat of our cult hero, Lip Silk, which is loved for being nourishing, kind and great tasting.

We recommend: Organic Lip Silk, £6.00
