Natural lipsticks offer so many advantages: beautiful colour, better tolerance by sensitive skin, and the benefits of nourishing plant oils and butters. But without synthetic coal tar dyes their staying power often doesn’t match a traditional lipstick. Never fear, there are solutions! Follow these tips on how to get lipstick to stay on:
Step 1 – Exfoliate: Preparing the surface gives the best results when painting a wall or applying foundation to your face, and the same goes for lipstick. Gently removing tired or dry skin from your lips will create a smoother canvas and bring moisture-holding fresh skin cells to the fore. There’s no need to exfoliate daily – every week is fine. Use our 3-in-1 Maca Mask which has finely ground sugar particles that scrub gently and give your lips a licking of glycolic acid. It is packed with other nutrients that nourish too. The sample size Maca Mask is ideal for lips if you want to try it out.
Step 2 - Moisturise: Rather than apply lip balm under lipstick, apply a good water-based moisturiser instead. Hydrating your lips is key to them not drying out which is crucial for helping lipstick to stay on. You can apply lip balm if you really can’t do without it, but allow it to absorb and then dab the excess oil off your lips with blotting paper to prevent your lipstick sliding off. Our Prebiotic Rich Hydration Cream with its plant-based collagen hydrates deeply and helps plump your lips.
Step 3: Outline (optional): Take a lip pencil and draw round the outline of your lips. Liner helps stop lipstick fading at the edges and can give your lipstick colour an extra dimension. Our Rose Lip Liner and Brown Lip Pencil tone with a number of our organic lipstick shades. You can also apply the liner across your entire lip to provide an anchor for your lipstick.
Step 4: Apply a 1st Primer Coat: Fill in your lips with a first coat of your chosen lipstick colour.
Step 5: Blot: Use blotting paper or a tissue to even out the colour.
Step 6: Prime with Powder: Next, take a small cosmetic brush and load it with a translucent powder. Dab it gently on your lips. If you don’t have translucent powder, you can use eyeshadow or blusher in a similar shade to your lipstick.
Many guides suggest using a powder primer before any lipstick, and indeed this does help lipstick stay on. However, an intermediate powder layer can provide a better finish and staying power.
Step 7: Apply 2nd Coat: Now apply a second coat of lipstick, ideally with a lip brush to avoid powder getting on your lipstick.
Layering lipstick is generally recommended for best results. And if you don’t powder between coats, we’d at least recommend blotting between layers to improve adhesion.
And there you have it. Perfectly painted lips that will stay naturally nourished all day!
