Our feet are one of the hardest working areas of our body. You don’t have to be a regular runner; just the usual day to day puts stress and strain on our feet. As a low-ish circulation area in the body, over time our feet get dry, cracked even, and tough skin areas develop on pressure points that can become sore. In winter time we tend to cover up and forget about our feet - late spring is the perfect time to give them some much needed attention.
In this series devoted to top-to-toe summer skincare, we tackle the ultimate tips for smooth feet. It’s not an overnight process, so start at least four weeks ahead of when you want to be dancing barefoot!
Weekly: At Home Cracked Feet Treatment
Step One: Exfoliate
The first step to smooth feet is tackling your dead skin. You can use a manual exfoliator like a pumice stone on very rough areas.
If your feet are cracked, pumice stones can make them a bit sore, so we suggest using a natural body exfoliator (without microbeads) like our Coconut Candy Scrub (pictured). Start at the heels and apply to dry feet in small, brisk circular motions. Go clockwise over the whole foot first, then anti clockwise to get dead skin cells moving.
Step Two: Rinse, Refresh & Moisturise
Using warm water and a natural organic face cloth, gently wipe away the scrub. If you’ve used our Coconut Candy Scrub you’ll find your feet feel a little smoother and moisturised already. Pat dry, then, coat the feet in a thick layer of rich moisturiser, like our Calendula Balm or Ultra Rich.
Step Three: Soak
Pop your feet into a warm bowl of water. We love to put marbles in the bottom for a quick foot massage and some essential oils to relax and revive.
Let them soak for up to 15 minutes, then remove and repeat step one, the scrub bit, all over again.
Step Four: Massage
Using a rich skin balm (look for one with soothing ingredients like shea butter and calendula, which will work over time) give yourself a DIY foot massage.
Starting at the heel and using your knuckles, knead into the sole of the feet.
Work your way down to your toes, using the forefinger and thumb to roll, then gently pull them.
Finish with sweeping movements down to the ankles.
Daily: Little Steps to Great Results
Each day, take five minutes of the morning to exfoliate and moisturise with a thick balm or butter.
Before bed slather the feet in the same butter and cover in cotton socks, before going to sleep to soften up the harder areas of skin.
By summer you’ll see amazing results.
More Quick Tips to Perfect, Smooth Feet:
Alongside your daily and weekly routines, you’ll also want to try the following:
1. Keep your nails trimmed straight across. Curved toes lead to ingrown toenails – ouch! Make sure you file them too, as sharp edges can catch and lead to sore patches on your toes.
2. Make sure to wear socks and shoes that fit. There’s no point doing all the hard work to get smooth feet, only to get blisters from poor fitting footwear and having to start again. If you do get a blister, don’t apply plasters, just let it dry naturally.
3. GO Barefoot: Not wearing shoes is a lovely way to connect to the earth. It can toughen the skin a little, so always moisturise afterwards, but it’s the healthiest way to protect the structure of your feet and keep them healthy.
4. Be kind to your cuticles. They may need clipping, but always get a professional to do this. Other than that, use a little oil or extra balm and rub into the side of your nails at bedtime.
