Many people believe that using sunscreen with a high SPF will prevent them from getting a tan. But is that really the case? Can you still achieve a bronzed glow while using SPF30?

Understanding SPF

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures a sunscreen's ability to block UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. An SPF30 sunscreen blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while an SPF50 blocks about 98%. The difference in protection between the two is minimal.

How to use an SPF30

Contrary to popular belief, you can still tan while using SPF30 sunscreen. The key is to apply it generously and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. SPF30 will protect your skin from burning, but it won't completely block the sun's rays, allowing you to develop a tan gradually.

So yes you can tan with SPF30

Using SPF30 sunscreen has many benefits. It reduces the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. By tanning slowly with SPF30, you can achieve a healthy glow without damaging your skin.

Remember, tanning is a sign of skin damage, so it's essential to protect your skin with sunscreen, even if you want to tan. SPF30 offers a good balance of protection and allows you to enjoy the sun safely.

It will contain fewer synthetic chemicals than an SPF 50, but with only slight reduction in protection. (Or if it's a mineral sunscreen, it's less likely to contain nanoparticles or leave a white film.)  

Don’t just rely on the SPF

While SPF measures protection against UVB rays, it doesn't tell you anything about protection against UVA rays. UVA rays can penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Antioxidant protection is also important as this will protect from free radical generation and premature ageing. Apply creams rich in natural vitamins.
