Sea Buckthorn Oil Skin Benefits

In Odylique’s sunny Suffolk garden, sea buckthorn grows enthusiastically along our front fence. It is incredibly resilient, requires relatively few nutrients from our sandy soil, and reaches great heights. It loves sun, soaking up the rays. This resilience, and its ability to convert so much sunlight into vitamins in its beautifully vibrant berries, makes it a brilliant skincare ingredient.

At Odylique we use a highly concentrated extract of organic sea buckthorn that maximises the superpower of the plant. Discover more about this wonder berry and where you’ll find it in Odylique products:

Sea Buckthorn Benefits for Skin:

1. Promoting skin elasticity and regeneration

Sea buckthorn extract is very rich in palmitoleic acid – an Omega 7 fatty acid that is rarely found in the plant kingdom. It is an essential part of our skin, but its levels decline as we age. This makes sea buckthorn oil a very valuable ingredient indeed. And together with high levels of Vitamin B12 - which boosts collagen & elastin production and reduces inflammation – sea buckthorn’s benefits for skin elasticity, skin regeneration and can even minimising scars, are significant.

2. Antioxidant – protecting from premature ageing and sun damage

The bright orange berries of the sea buckthorn shrub are packed with antioxidant vitamins A, B12, C & E. As a whole, this group of vitamins provides a synergy of antioxidant benefits, including helping neutralise free radical damage.

The berries are particularly rich in carotenoids (vitamin A). These provide the strong orange colour, and together with vitamin B12 improve the look of age spots and hyper pigmentation, but more importantly, carotenoids help prevent and repair sun damage.

3. Moisturising, soothing and barrier supporting

Apart from palmitoleic acid, sea buckthorn’s other unsaturated fatty acids - linolenic and linoleic - increase skin moisture levels, providing a soothing effect and supporting the skin barrier.

At the extreme, sea buckthorn oil is said to be so soothing that is almost has an analgesic effect, which is why it is traditionally used for sunburn.

Benefits for Hair

Sea buckthorn oil is not only a wonder ingredient for the skin, but also strengthens the hair. This is why it is also used in shampoos, conditioners and other restorative hair products. You’ll find it in Odylique’s Lavender Conditioner which is targeted at dry or damaged hair.

Sea Buckthorn in Odylique Skincare

Sea buckthorn’s support for the skin barrier is why we use it as an ingredient in both our dry skin hero balms - Ultra Rich and Ultra Rich V.

As sea buckthorn oil has antioxidant, barrier-supporting and regenerative properties, it is also especially useful in skincare and makeup for menopausal, dry or mature skin. You’ll find it in our Timeless Rose Moisturiser, Avocado 24H Cream, Superfruit Concentrate and Cream Foundation.

Sea buckthorn helps prevent sun damage and repair skin already damaged by the sun which is why we use it in our Sunscreen:

Finally, we also take advantage of the soothing – and colourful - properties of sea buckthorn in several makeup products – concealer, eye shadow and lipstick all contain our super sea buckthorn extract.
