Sensitivity to Sunscreen

Sensitivity to Sunscreen

Many people experience sensitivity to sunscreen, which can result in redness, itching, or even a rash after application. It's important to understand the causes of this sensitivity and how to manage it effectively.

What causes sensitivity to sunscreen?

Sensitivity to sunscreen can be caused by a variety of factors, including the ingredients in the sunscreen, individual skin type, and underlying skin conditions. Common culprits include chemical filters, preservatives, fragrances, and even the sun itself. (Sun - rather than sunscreen - sensitivity is often referred to as 'prickly heat' rash.)

How to manage sensitivity to sunscreen?

If you experience sensitivity to sunscreen, there are several steps you can take to manage it.

1. Choose the Right Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Look for products that are labelled "hypoallergenic" or "sensitive skin" to minimise the risk of irritation, as there are a number of potentially harmful ingredients in sunscreen

Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with ingredients like zinc oxide, which are less likely to cause reactions.

And avoid artificial fragrance (‘parfum’ on the ingredients list) as this is one of the most common triggers of skin sensitivity. Similarly artificial preservatives like MI and triclosan also can cause problems.

Certified natural or certified organic sunscreens generally contain far fewer sensitising ingredients and so save you the bother of deciphering the ingredients list. There's more about  how to choose sunscreen here.

Try our Natural Sunscreen – it is certified organic and natural and is free from all artificial ingredients. It uses zinc oxide as a physical sun shield and contains skin-soothing ingredients like chamomile and shea butter.

2. Do a Patch Test

Before slathering sunscreen all over your body, do a patch test on a small area of skin to see how your skin reacts. This can help you avoid a full-blown reaction if you discover that a particular sunscreen doesn't agree with your skin.

What are the alternatives?

If you find that you are still sensitive to sunscreen, there are alternatives you can explore.

Clothing and Shade

Wearing protective clothing, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and using physical barriers like umbrellas or hats can help protect your skin without relying solely on sunscreen.

Consult a Dermatologist

If you continue to experience sensitivity to sunscreen despite trying different products, it may be time to consult a dermatologist. They can help identify any underlying skin conditions that may be contributing to your reaction and recommend suitable sunscreen options for your skin type.

Remember, protecting your skin from the sun is essential for preventing  sunburnspremature aging, and skin cancer. Don't let sensitivity to sunscreen hold you back from enjoying the great outdoors. It’s important to get some sun exposure to support your vitamin D levels. And with the right approach and products, you can keep your skin safe and healthy all year round.
